'Lemo' in Tana Toraja


I wrote this note as a report in a study of culture. One of the city that became the destination for foreign travelers, including domestic. We visited Toraja goal is to look directly at the history of culture and art that were there, which is still alive today. Because as we know that, customary in the city Toraja be the most respected and highly regarded. One that I will discuss is the unique burial object named "Lemo"

Toraja is located  one of destination local culture in south sulawesi, beside the cultural is very famous in the world, also the habit of toraja’s people was very unique. Toraja also is good in tourism sector such as, ke’te kesu, lemo, londa, wae makula, baby grave  and many else. One of be the focused  in this report namely evidence of ancient animist culture called lemo.


Lemo is an ancient cemetery in toraja’s cliffs, this grave is unique from anthropology side, caused put the corpses within the cliffs through the hole that make to used  iron chisel for six months until two  years (based on interview in there). This place is called as place of soul. The place of this grave is fusion between death, art, ritul. In certain time the clothes of corpses will changed by Ma’nene ceremony. the name of lemo derived  from  the shape of a rounded hill resembles lime. There are about seventy five grave holes, and every holes is grave hole from one family that has size 3x5 m.


This grave used for the last time four years ago (based on interview in there), before the funeral procession the family of corpses necessary buffalo (tedong) at least minimal twelve and maximum twenty four buffalos. one of uniqueness of Lemo lies in a wooden puppet symbol, the number of dolls symbolize the number of corpses in it.
